FREEDOM PRECEDES INDEPENDENCE

What does freedom mean? Is its meaning hidden in monstrous thesauruses or is it free will put to action? Is it hidden in open communism or is it the honest expression of creativity soaring high like an eagle? What are the dynamics of spectacular personal freedom- a life well-lived or the one spoilt over carefree gregariousness? Each year is a new step into the more challenging, complex and mysterious realms of developing its identity for our beloved nation. Each year the proudly fluttering tricolor instills in us a sense of loyalty and re-instates our faith in the refined canon that inspired our forefathers. Also, each year we are faced with the demons that are the questions posed above.

For any spatial entity to exist independently in nature, its freedom is a prerequisite. This simple law of Physics has important implications. In nature as in life, what we see is what we get. A nation can only be as free and thereby as independent as its most powerless or needy citizen is. The true meaning of democracy stems from this simple thought- Its all about 'Power to the People'. If, as an Indian national with no flashy titles, you are free to walk down the lane during wee hours of the night just because you feel like it and no questions are asked- consider yourself independent. If, being an Indian woman, you feel free to dress exactly the way you want, go wherever you please at whatever time of the day or night you wish and have the freedom to marry or not marry to your accord- consider yourself independent. If, being a typical teenager in this country, you get the freedom to opt for a career in a creative field with little or no promise of a fat pay check and your parents don't quiz you about it- consider yourself independent.

The meaning and nature of independence vary drastically. In some scenarios it means security while in many others it translates into a lack of it. How we define what makes us feel free is up to us. There is no society, really. It is just a vicious way of keeping the power in the hands of just a few. Ultimately, it all boils down to this one word: Power; for in our corrupt-to-the-core nation, you are ever truly free only if you hold magnanimous power. Power works in mysterious ways. It can cripple a system or make it a demonic super power. Little power is fatal as it leads to egotism. Justified and well-placed power in the hands of real leaders can transform the world. The essence of independence is self-dependence- a direct consequence of effective leadership. When we take charge of our lives we become free. This freedom then liberates us of the shackles that the unfavorable circumstances around us bind us into. "Nothing was ever achieved by those who did not believe that they were superior to the circumstances."

Freedom begets freedom and independence is a by-product. Independence is a state of elation attained by consistently exercising our 'Right to Freedom'. India will be independent the day it truly gains freedom. Will the 67th year of our independence change the dismal scene? One can only hope!
Happy Independence Day.
