THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS

The true essence of every religion is to help human-beings find a righteous path to real, spiritual growth and progress. One underlying factor that helps is a simple guide of what not to do. An interesting find in this regard is that every single religion in this world defines what are called “Sins” or vices that lead humans towards their animalistic nature or innate wild call; “To err is human”. It is said that if one sets upon the seemingly impossible task of overcoming these faults, one becomes a saint and in the rare case that these sins are successfully eradicated, one attains the title of a prophet, a true messenger of the heavens. In a jest, there are 7 basic sins:

  1. PRIDE-:

When it comes to the top slot in the hierarchy of spiritually-fatal pitfalls, the “haughty eyes” take the crown. Pride is said to be the root of all evil. To look down upon others is judging the work of Mother Nature herself! To have false ego and unjustified belief in one’s abilities is like living in a beautiful day-dream; the moment the bubble smashes reality smacks one in the face.

  1. ENVY-:

A continued delusional existence in pride leads one to believing one is supreme and hence, when some other person seems to be having a better shot at life this doesn’t go down too well. Envy blinds one with rage leading to serious consequences, if left unchecked. It’s the fore-runner of violence.

  1. GLUTTONY-:

Gluttony is the feeling of acquiring more than one requires. It validates the point of view of the father of the nation when he said, “Earth has enough for everyone’s needs but not for anyone’s greed.” Gluttony is a feeling emerging out of some misplaced sense of security and the results are the different obsessions that can scale up to maniac mental disorders.

  1. LUST-:

If there is one vice that every single person is sure to have deeply indulged in at some point of time or the other, it is Lust: The compelling feeling of fulfilling sexual desires. It the most “popular” of all vices- Our very own dirty little secret ;)

  1. ANGER-:

“Hell hath no fury” is sadly true! Wrath is that one vice that can single-handedly destroy the world. Man creates wars which destroy mankind. Anger knows no boundaries nor limits and a human being full of rage is said to be a form of Satan himself.

  1. GREED-:

Greed can be defined as lust for materialistic things or tangible assets. The greed of a man has the potential to rob off an entire planet, leave it barren and still not be satisfied. It is when human greed turns insatiable that the world heads towards catastrophe.

  1. SLOTH-:

Ever experienced the condemning feeling of not working hard, being complacent and wanting people to treat you like the king/queen of the world? That’s Sloth. Although it ranks low on the ‘Top ten lead-you-straight-to-hell vices” list, it does have a way of getting to us and slowing us down on our personal path of progress. Whether it is getting the top rank in the institute, getting your dream job or proposing to your dream man/girl, if sloth gets the better of you then your dream is doomed. Procrastination is the first step towards this greater vice.

There is no upper limit for human desires and no matter what they can never be all fulfilled at the same point of time. If you achieve one goal, ten more will crop up. The best way to go about life is to tackle it one step at a time, to climb the ladder of success one single stair at a go, to knock at someone’s heart one soft tap at a time and if we can do this no greed can steal our souls, lust would fail to seduce us, envy wont raise its ugly head, anger won’t provoke us, gluttony would be a far call, we won’t become slaves to sloth and there would be no sense of pride, merely a sense of morality and righteousness that would linger on in the form of a sweet smile on our faces.
